Pay-for-performance (P4P) contracts have evolved from rare demonstration programs to become commonplace. In the next few years, participation will become mandatory with many payers. In the future, lack of P4P participation is likely to entail reimbursement penalties. Successful P4P execution requires a robust EMR with the ability to capture structured data, the ability to aggregate and sort data, and the ability to provide real-time decision support regarding P4P issues. The development and use of such a system will be described.
