by Chris Moon, Samsung Medical Center Data Scientist
My personal connection with the HIMSS conference began in 2023 in Chicago, as the world was recovering from COVID-19.
As a Data Scientist, I joined Samsung Medical Center in 2020 as my fifth workplace, where I took the lead in developing DOCC (Data-based Operation & Communication Center), an operational platform based on predictive modeling of medical resources. Initially launched as a pilot project, DOCC started delivering visible results across various areas such as surgeries, blood collections, and CT scans. These achievements significantly contributed to Samsung Medical Center obtaining HIMSS DIAM and EMRAM Stage 7 validation.
The following year, the DOCC platform continued to evolve, and one of its key components, the Surgical PAN (Notice Board), played a crucial role in Samsung Medical Center receiving the Davies Award of Excellence last year. Fortunately, this year, I had the honor of being a presenter at the HIMSS conference to share a case study on the Davies Award, specifically focusing on the Surgical PAN within the DOCC platform.

To share the know-how behind this success, we were given an opportunity to present at HIMSS. That was when I first attended the HIMSS conference to support my boss at the time, the CCMO (Chief of Clinical Management Office), in delivering the presentation.
This year was even more meaningful, as Dr. Seung-Woo Park, the President of Samsung Medical Center, delivered the Opening Keynote Speech, sharing the hospital’s 30-year journey of Digital Transformation with a global audience. Additionally, HIMSS provided various programs showcasing real-world applications of generative AI in healthcare, allowing me to experience firsthand how the field has advanced over the past two years.
After presenting the success story of the DOCC Surgical PAN, I had the opportunity to answer questions from hospital representatives who had similar challenges in optimizing surgical processes. I felt proud knowing that our efforts could help others in their journey. This experience also inspired me to share more success stories beyond the surgical category in the future, receive feedback on areas we may not have considered, and contribute to the global medical community by exchanging knowledge and best practices.
It was an invaluable conference filled with learning and inspiration, and I look forward to continuing this journey together in the future.
