Chicago Neighborhoods to Explore During HIMSS27

Start with where you’ll be

McCormick Place and your hotel are the two anchors for planning your Chicago time.

A neighborhood can be convenient for dinner after sessions and still be nowhere near your hotel. During HIMSS27, the most useful way to narrow Chicago’s options is to start with those two locations: where your conference day ends and where you’ll spend the night.

McCormick Place sits south of the downtown core, near the South Loop, Chinatown and Bronzeville. The hotel areas covered in our guide extend north into the Loop, around the Chicago River and toward River North and Michigan Avenue. That gives you several ways to explore without making every outing a separate excursion.

Explore the areas around McCormick Place.

Closest to the conference

Start here if you’re staying near McCormick Place or heading out directly after sessions.

South Loop: Get to know the area around your conference base. Motor Row and the Prairie Avenue District offer historic streets close to the convention campus, while the broader South Loop extends north toward the Museum Campus and Grant Park. It’s a useful area to explore in pieces throughout the week, rather than treating it as one destination. For individual coffee stops, meals and meetup spots, use our guide to what’s near McCormick Place.

Chinatown: Make this your nearby neighborhood outing. West of McCormick Place, Chinatown offers a distinct change of setting without heading across the city. Start around Wentworth Avenue and Chinatown Square for shops, bakeries and restaurants. Ping Tom Memorial Park adds riverfront scenery if daylight and April weather cooperate. Give yourself time to browse rather than arriving only for a reservation.

Bronzeville: Choose it for Black history and neighborhood culture. South of the convention center, Bronzeville is known for its role in Chicago’s Black cultural history, alongside public art and contemporary galleries. It rewards a more deliberate visit: choose a landmark, gallery or walking route before setting out. Nearby geographically does not mean every point of interest is clustered beside McCormick Place.

Check the actual destination

Neighborhood names cover more ground than a map label suggests.

Use the address of the place you want to visit when checking your route. Include the walk out of your McCormick Place building, and check the trip back to your hotel separately. A destination that looks close to the convention campus may still require a substantial walk.

Around the downtown hotel areas

Explore near your hotel when you want to keep the evening simple.

These areas are north of McCormick Place. If you’re staying downtown, they may be easiest to enjoy after returning to your hotel.

What makes it worth exploring
Where to focus

The Loop

The strongest starting point for classic Chicago sights on a first visit

Millennium Park and Cloud Gate, the Chicago Cultural Center, or the riverfront

River North

Galleries, architecture and a busy evening scene

The streets around your dinner plans, with Marina City and the river nearby

Streeterville & the Magnificent Mile

Shopping, landmark buildings and access toward the lakefront

North Michigan Avenue; continue east into Streeterville if that fits your plans

The Loop is the priority if you have limited sightseeing time and want recognizable Chicago landmarks. River North makes sense for an evening built around dinner or drinks. Streeterville is particularly useful to know if your hotel is east of Michigan Avenue. The Magnificent Mile is a stretch of that avenue, rather than a separate neighborhood.

Choose one area for an evening rather than trying to cover all three. Even neighboring downtown districts can involve more walking than you want after a full conference day.

Worth planning an evening around

West Loop and Fulton Market are destinations for a longer dinner outing.

The West Loop’s former industrial buildings now house a concentration of restaurants, shops and galleries. Randolph Street’s Restaurant Row and nearby Fulton Market are useful starting points when coordinating an evening with colleagues.

This is a good choice when dinner is the main plan. Allow time to get there from McCormick Place, and check the location before booking: West Loop covers a broad area, so two reservations carrying the same neighborhood label may not be close together.

You don’t need to stay in the neighborhood to enjoy it. Pick a destination, make the trip and leave room for a look around before or afterward.

If you have more time

These neighborhoods suit a free afternoon or a longer stay.

For a change from the convention campus and downtown, choose the area that matches what you enjoy:

  • Pilsen: Mexican culture, colorful murals and the National Museum of Mexican Art. Focus your visit around an attraction or a stretch of 18th Street, rather than expecting everything to sit on one block. Explore Pilsen.
  • Wicker Park & Bucktown: Independent shops, bookstores, vintage stores and music venues. The intersection of Milwaukee, North and Damen avenues provides a useful starting point for browsing. Explore Wicker Park and Bucktown.
  • Lincoln Park: Parkland, the zoo and residential streets with shops and cafes. It’s an option for attendees extending their stay or setting aside a larger opening to explore north of downtown. Explore Lincoln Park.

These aren’t necessarily difficult trips, but they deserve time beyond the journey there and back. Check attraction hours before committing, especially if you’re leaving after conference programming.

Make Chicago part of your HIMSS27 plans

A nearby outing and one longer evening can give you a feel for the city.

Start with the neighborhood around your hotel, add Chinatown or the South Loop when you’re near McCormick Place, and choose one destination farther afield if your schedule allows. You’ll have more time to enjoy each place without spending the week crossing the city.
