The Future of AI Assistants in Healthcare

Walking the expo floor at HIMSS25, it was clear that AI assistants are no longer just buzzwords – they’re already solving real problems in healthcare. From transcription tools freeing doctors from paperwork to chatbots answering patient questions after hours, these helpers are lightening the load for care teams. A common refrain emerged: AI is an enabler, not a replacement [2], for healthcare professionals.
Reducing the Administrative Burden
AI assistants excel at the busywork. By automating data entry, medical coding, scheduling and other routine tasks, they free clinicians to focus on patients. One EHR vendor at HIMSS25 even unveiled an AI-driven system built to “deliver streamlined workflows, reduced administrative burden… [while] maintaining rigorous human oversight” [1]. The result? Doctors and nurses spend less time on screens and more time with patients.
Smarter Answers with RAG
Out-of-the-box AI models can stumble on medical specifics – a Mayo Clinic study saw under 40% accuracy on certain healthcare questions [3]. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) tackles this by pulling in up-to-date information from trusted sources (like EHRs, clinical guidelines or research databases) in real time. An AI assistant with RAG can tap into the latest evidence and patient data for more accurate, context-rich answers [3]. This boosts reliability and trust – the assistant can even show its sources to back up its recommendations [3].

24/7 Patient Engagement via Chatbots
AI assistants are also transforming how healthcare organizations interact with patients. AI-powered chatbots on websites and apps now answer common questions, help schedule appointments, and even perform basic triage. They provide answers 24/7, so patients aren’t left waiting on hold. By handling these routine inquiries, chatbots “reduce the pressure… on your administrative team” and boost patient satisfaction [4] – freeing human staff to focus on more complex needs.
After HIMSS25: Accuracy, Oversight, and Integration
Now that the conference buzz has died down, healthcare leaders are focused on making AI assistants reliable, safe and seamlessly integrated. Improving accuracy is a top priority – nobody wants a “hallucinating” bot giving medical advice. Equally important is strong human oversight: experts at HIMSS25 urged clear policies and keeping humans in the loop to use AI responsibly [5]. Finally, AI tools must plug into EHRs and other platforms so they fit naturally into care delivery, and breaking down data silos is essential – interoperability was a major theme at HIMSS25 (one exhibitor’s motto: “Get Health Connected.”) – because when AI systems can share data and context freely, they become true team members [5].
The takeaway from HIMSS25 is optimistic: AI assistants have a bright future as collaborators in healthcare. By automating the mundane and supporting clinicians with insights, these tools can help providers deliver better care. The road ahead is about refining accuracy, keeping the human touch in the loop, and integrating systems – so that technology truly empowers people in healthcare.
